New Trailer for ‘Masters of the Universe’ Is a Love Letter to ‘80s Action

When it comes to adapting iconic cartoon and toy brands, Transformers remains a rare success story in live-action, while G.I. Joe is one major property studios just haven’t managed to crack—despite multiple big-budget attempts. But the genre isn’t out of chances just yet. Another beloved franchise is gearing up for a theatrical comeback, and the new Masters of the Universe trailer might finally win over skeptics while thrilling longtime fans.

Before the first teaser dropped, many questioned whether Masters of the Universe could translate faithfully into live-action. The franchise is defined by its bold colors and delightfully over-the-top tone—elements some assumed wouldn’t work outside animation. However, that early footage quickly put those concerns to rest, showcasing a world deeply rooted in the source material, from He-Man’s iconic look to the menacing presence of Skeletor. As it turns out, that teaser only scratched the surface.

The newly released full trailer from Amazon MGM Studios, ahead of its June 5 theatrical debut, offers a much deeper look at the film’s scope. Nicholas Galitzine leads the story as He-Man, initially introduced as an ordinary office worker before discovering his royal lineage and immense power. The trailer quickly transports viewers to Eternia, the vibrant and mystical world fans know and love.

Familiar faces populate this universe, including Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, and Camila Mendes as Teela. Armed with the Power Sword, He-Man is shown battling massive armies—and ultimately clashing with Jared Leto’s Skeletor, whose voice is finally revealed.

The trailer follows a wave of promotional art that recently surfaced online, unveiling more key characters. Morena Baccarin appears as the Sorceress, alongside James Wilkinson as Mekaneck and Jon Xue Zhang as Ram Man. Together, they hint at a sprawling, character-rich adaptation.

Encouragingly, the film doesn’t shy away from the franchise’s signature aesthetic. While some adjustments have been made for live-action, the colorful, eccentric spirit of the original cartoon and toy line remains intact. It’s shaping up to be less of a reinvention and more of a celebration.

Of course, whether it delivers on that promise remains to be seen. Still, the creative team appears fully committed. Director Travis Knight has emphasized embracing the property’s “inherent silliness,” weaving those elements into a story that resonates with modern audiences. After successfully blending nostalgia and heart in Bumblebee, Knight seems well-positioned to bring Masters of the Universe to life in a way fans have long hoped for.
