Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan returns to movie making, with the unstoppable franchise frontman set to write and direct a new Western war movie. But there’s a catch. Now well-renowned for kick-starting the Yellowstone series, which has branched off into all manner of spin-offs, sequels, and prequels, as well as the hit shows Landman, Tulsa King, and more, Sheridan is no stranger to the big screen, having written Sicario, Hell or High Water, and helmed Wind River. Now, he’s back, but seeing his new movie won’t be easy.
Taylor Sheridan has now been tasked with writing and directing what’s been described as an “innovative” Western war movie based on the Battle of the Alamo. Taking place in 1836, the battle was a pivotal moment in the Texas Revolution. Taking place over 13 days, the Battle of the Alamo saw Texan defenders fight against thousands of Mexican troops led by President General Antonio López de Santa Anna, and while many were killed, including Davy Crockett, they refused to surrender, with the battle becoming a symbol of resistance against seemingly impossible odds.
The Battle of the Alamo has been given the cinematic treatment before, most famously in John Wayne’s 1960 epic The Alamo, which starred Wayne as Davy Crockett. It being a prime project for Taylor Sheridan surely needs no explanation, with the filmmaker now creating a 4D movie to be shown at the Alamo Visitor Center and Museum in San Antonio at the museum’s under-construction 4D theater.
Per a press release on the Texas Lieutenant Governor’s website, the project is described as a “state-of-the-art immersive experience designed to recreate the story of the Battle of the Alamo,” with Sheridan sharing a statement, saying…
“The Alamo is the very bedrock Texas was founded upon. To chronicle the sacrifice made by the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives defending the Alamo is an honor I eagerly accept.”
As for the theater itself, it’s been called “the most technologically advanced 4D Theater in the world,” with Sheridan’s movie boasting “Dynamic visual effects, sound, and physical elements will help visitors gain a deeper understanding of the siege nearly 190 years ago.” In a further statement, Lt. Governor Dan Patrick praised Sheridan for telling the story of the American west like no other…
“Once I saw the plan for the theater, I knew there was only one screenwriter, film producer, and director in the world to make this film for the Alamo Museum – Taylor Sheridan. Over the last decade, Taylor has told the story of the American west – the people, the land, the depth, and the history – in a way no other filmmaker has. In addition to his amazing film portfolio, Taylor is a native Texan who knows and loves our state and its history.
“I reached out to Taylor and asked if he would consider filming and directing this historic project at the Alamo. Despite his incredible schedule, he did not hesitate before enthusiastically answering yes. This is an amazing gift from Taylor, and a big win for Texas, from this iconic and gifted storyteller, screenwriter, and director.”
The Alamo Visitor Center and Museum is scheduled to open in 2027, with the movie marking Sheridan’s return to directing following 2021’s Those Who Wish Me Dead. While it’s unlikely to get a wide release, the Yellowstone creator has plenty of other projects in the pipeline, including the action thriller F.A.S.T., a live-action Call of Duty adaptation, and various small screen projects such as Lioness Season 3 and Dutton Ranch.
